Are Children Making Your Clothes?

Monday, October 29, 2007

The Gap under fire for clothes made by 10-year-olds. Who's regulating the garment industry?

Gap Inc. has severed all ties with a company in India accused of making clothes using child labor, CNN reports.

The Gap's president said that any and all clothes made in the New Dehli sweatshop would not be sold.

"It's deeply, deeply disturbing to all of us," Gap President Marka Hansen said Sunday after seeing a video of children working at a sweatshop.

It's refreshing to see a company own up to a problem and immediately rectify the situation. But really? You didn't know? It seems that someone at The Gap would be responsible for regulating where the clothing was made. Also, it does make us wonder, how many companies are still using child labor? Is this an isolated incident, or just one company that got caught?
