CDC: New Respiratory Virus Kills 10
U.S. health officials said yesterday that, since May 2006, ten people—including two infants—have died from a new and virulent strain of adenovirus, which frequently causes the common cold. “Whether you’re a healthy young adult, an infant, or an elderly person, this virus can cause severe respiratory disease at any age,” says John Su, who investigates infectious diseases for the CDC. Adenoviruses frequently cause acute upper-respiratory infections like the common cold, but also can cause other illnesses—including inflammation of the stomach and intestines, pink eye, bladder infection, and rashes.
