12-day-old twins were reportedly given an overdose of heparin.
According to TMZ, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, Quaid's twins, were accidentally given a 10,000 unit dose of heparin, instead of the typical 10 units. As many as 13 patients were mistakenly given the overdose, but the effects are more critical because of the age and weight of the twins. However, it's reported that the babies are in stable condition. Heparin is an anti-coagulant used to flush out IV lines and prevent blood clots, and a TMZ source says the babies are now being given protamine, which reverses the effects of heparin. We have to wonder how this happened and what all parents can do to prevent it from happening to their children. Those answers and more to come soon.
We called friend of Mom•Logic pediatrician Dr. Gwenn and asked her what to tell parents about this terrible tragedy. "I can imagine that parents would be terrified after hearing about the hospital error. But they should rest assured that this kind of thing very rarely occurs." Dr. Gwenn adds, "The babies are in a state-of-the-art NICU where you'd never expect something like this. What happened is such a freak accident and unfortunately, parents can't do anything but support the babies in this situation."
