Kanye West's Mother Dies
Mom of hip-hop superstar dies suddenly over the weekend.
Kanye West is recognized for the love of his mother almost as much as he is for his six Grammys. Dr. Donda West passed away Saturday due to complications following a cosmetic procedure, according to her publicist.
West's 2005 album featured the song "Hey Mama," which he wrote in honor of her. "Hey Mama, I wanna scream so loud for you, cuz I'm so proud of you ... I appreciate what you allowed for me. I just want you to be proud of me." The 58-year-old professor-turned-manager co-authored a book called "Raising Kanye: Life Lessons From the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar."
The loss of a parent is difficult at any age, but many people don't realize the traumatic effect it can have on a grown child. Family counselor and Mom•Logic friend Rosanne Tobey says it's especially rough when a parent dies suddenly because there's no time to say goodbye. "Grief is a natural process. There's a misconception that you'll "get over it." Through the process there will be good days and bad days. Eventually that will turn to good weeks and bad weeks, then months. It's important to go through it and not to try to block it out. Express any feelings to a trusted friend or couselor."
Tobey also has advice for loved ones who want to support those who are grief-stricken. "Listen empathetically and let them talk. It's easy to get uncomfortable, but they need to share their story as many times as necessary until they feel like they're able to move forward." Our hearts go out to Kanye and his family at this difficult time.
