The Quaids' newborn twins are recovering from an accidental overdose.

Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, who were born via surrogate on Nov. 8th, are now in stable condition after receiving an overdose of Heparin days ago. Cedars-Sinai issued a formal statement saying a "preventable error" had occurred.

Although mistakes like this are very rare, dealing with any medical situation with your newborn is beyond scary, and being armed with some solid information can be crucial when you need it. Mom•Logic friend and pediatrician, Dr. Gwenn, provided us with some tips (and Mom•Logic Moms who've been in similar situations added a few too) to help make sure you get the best medical care if your newborn is ever hospitalized.

1. Get to know the hospital staff. Nurses and residents can be your allies but they are also really busy. Hard as it is, before you drill them for information take a minute to learn their names and introduce yourself, make sure they know you as a person and not just as "the patient's Mom".

2. Learn the facts and take notes. Though mistakes as drastic as this one are rare, there are many places a medical mistake can originate, a paper trail will help you if you have to go back and sort out what happened later.

3. Take breaks when you can. Be sure to take care of yourself during this stress including getting out of the hospital at times. You'll think more clearly and be a more effective advocate for your child if you have rest, good nutrition and some time to think away from the sights and sounds of the hospital now and again.

4. Bring an advocate with you. You are so involved emotionally with the situation and so is your husband.  Another close relative or friend can help you evaluate what's going on and make careful choices.
