Could. You. Just. Stop. Talking.
Some hairstylists want you to know: Zip it while they snip it!
Bartenders are famous for listening to patrons' sob stories, but some stylists say "Cut it out!" when it comes to divulging personal info, according to a recent article in the NY Times. We did a little Q&A with our two favorite stylists; Hollywood Hair Guy Dean Banowetz and Mom of a Mom•Logic staffer, Melodie Griffin.
Mom•Logic: Do people reveal things you wish they wouldn't?
Melodie: They really don't have to tell me about what they do in bed.
Dean: All the time. But the only time I've ever been torn about the code of ethics and honoring privacy is when a wife came in who was really distraught. She shared that she was not having sex with her husband of 10 years, and that she didn't feel he loved her anymore. Her husband was also a client, and talked about how he was "banging his secretary."
ML: Has anything just cracked you up?
Dean: One client kept trying to sneak color into the bathroom to color her pubic hair. She didn't think any of us knew, but we knew exactly what she was doing.
ML cracks up.
ML: How can we, as clients, know when we're telling you something you really don't want to hear? Any signs to look for?
Melodie: When I change the subject or make a face in the mirror. The nonchalant nod and "mmm hmmmm's " are normally a good sign.
Dean: There are a lot of times when I try to divert the conversation to something else.
ML: Why do you think clients want to tell you so much about their lives?
Melodie: Because the chair is magic. They don't think of me as a doctor or psychologist— they think of me as their friend. They want me to help them figure out their problems. It's therapeutic.
Dean: I'm overly supportive. I don't try to squash anything—they come to me because I'm a good listener as well.
ML: Any "parting" thoughts?
Melodie: It really is so much fun to learn about all the different people. It's always like "social hour" at the salon. Everyone is different with different secrets.
Dean: I can't do a single thing about their problems, but I can listen. Sometimes people just need to vent—get it out of their system. It's true whether you're a celebrity or non-celebrity.
