Navigating the holiday gifting and tipping
Now we appreciate our trash being picked up—truly we do. But where do we draw the line in holiday gift giving? How about the favorite barista at Starbucks? Or that cute single Mom who rings us up at the grocery store? If we see them a couple of times a week and they always greet us with a smile, do we need to gift 'em?
| We turned to Money Magazine for advice—they suggest shelling out this much cash per person: Mail carrier: $20 Hairdresser: $20 Cleaning person: $75 Occasional babysitter: $25 Full-time nanny: $270 Gardener/yard worker: $50 Newspaper carrier: $15 Garbage collector: $20 |
For many, holiday tipping adds up to hundreds of dollars. Is this outrageous, or just the price we pay for great service? We want to hear from you!

These tips are ridiculously low. Do you want your nanny to quit on you or your garbage collector to throw trash on your lawn? I’d pretty much double your nanny’s salary per week and give that garbage man at least 75 bucks or risk losing your trash cans in 2008.

75 bucks for garbage? Are you kidding me? Some of us can’t shell out 1000 dollars in tips. Last time I checked, it’s a nice tip not a salary. Considering the garbage is not a volunteer position (meaning I pay for it) $20-25 is a nice amount.

I hate my garbage man-there was a windstorm 2 weeks ago and one of my bags had rolled 3 feet across the lawn - he actually walked over and left a tag on the bag, telling me that it was too far away from the curb - and left it there. no tip for him the newspaper kid - sure mailman - maybe - gotta check the budget

We leave a can of popcorn or cookies out for our garbage men and they really appreciate it. We can’t afford the cash tip, and how do they divide it up? We don’t always have the same people doing the route. Thankfully, our garbage men seem happy that we just remember them at Christmas and do what we can to show them we appreciate the work they do. And as a full time Nanny, I would be happy with anything that shows you appreciate the work I do. Keep it in your personal budget. I must say I have been treated really well with my families.

What about my super? I’m giving him 100 bucks, and yet when my toilet is broken it takes him 24 hours to come fix it. That’s a lot of runs to starbucks to use their bathroom!

I’m sorry, but I’m not tipping ANY of these people. First of all, I don’t use half of these services, or I might tip someone for the holidays - like a babysitter or cleaning lady. That’s reasonable. But the trash people? Um, no. My trash people do a terrible job. They always leave the trash can right behind my car, instead of on the curb where it belongs. I don’t even spend that much of some of my family members. I can’t afford to. Why don’t they give ME a holiday tip? I could use the money too!

No way… Seriously? And how would the garbage man get my gift? Would I have to wait for the truck to come & pick up the trash & run it to the end of my driveway? Or would I just put it out there next to the big black bags & hope it doesn’t go to the dump? Everything is automated here, so they don’t even have to leave the driver’s seat!! What about the completely different guy that picks up the recycling? An extra $20 for him too? No way…
