Take That, Popcorn Lung!: USA Today reports that ConAgra has removed a controversial chemical from its microwave popcorn that gives the snack a buttery, creamy taste, citing concern for its workers' health. ConAgra manufactures more than half of the nation's microwave popcorn. By January, none of the company's products will contain diacetyl.
Suicide on the Rise: The suicide rate among middle-aged Americans has reached its highest point in at least 25 years, reports MSNBC. The rate rose by about 20 percent between 1999 and 2004 for U.S. residents ages 45 through 54—far outpacing increases among younger adults, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.
Counting Sheep Hereditary?: Insomnia may run in families, reports USA Today. A study in this month's issue of the journal Sleep reports that people who have experienced bouts of insomnia are more likely than good sleepers to have a close relative with the condition. (Oh, great, another thing to lose sleep over...)
Guys Can Have Breast Cancer Gene, Too: Doctors urge men to get tested for breast cancer gene, reports the Associated Press. "We try to reach out to the men in these families, particularly men who have little children," Dr. Mary Daly of Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia told the AP. "If they were to die without being tested, their children would grow up without that information" that they, too, were at risk, she said. Will you urge your husband to get tested? Comment below.
