Why are otherwise level-headed Moms getting crazy when it comes to the hottest holiday gifts?
Remember the Cabbage Patch craze? Pokemon? The original Tickle Me Elmo? For as long as we can remember, there have been "must have" holiday toys. This year, everybody and their mother wants a Wii. In fact, especially their mother. But is it really about the kids, or do Moms just go cuckoo when it comes to pleasing their offspring?
One of our Mom•Logic Moms admits that she never even considered a Wii until she saw how hard to get it was. "My husband doesn't need a Wii. My kids are toddlers. Why am I running all over the place to find a gift my family doesn't even need?" She adds, "I hit Toys R Us early yesterday morning to get the Fisher Price Smart Cycle after seeing it on Mom•Logic. How did a Web site suck me into rushing out for a toy I didn't even know about the day before? I work here!"
We asked Mom•Logic friend and psychologist Dr. Pamela Varady what the motivation is for parents who go over the top when it comes to finding the perfect gift. "Parents are so addicted to making their kids happy. They'll do anything that will put a smile on their child's face."
We also asked Dr. Varady if parents should resist temptation, or enjoy the madness. "Find a balance. Pick and choose what's worth it. Ask yourself, 'How long will this bring my child happiness? Is it educational?' If 10 minutes after opening it they're not interested, you'll be wondering why you killed yourself to get it."
