Let's face it—when the kids are off from school, it can be anything but a vacation. How do we keep them entertained when the weather's less than cooperative? We called our friends at Common Sense Media* and teamed up to create a three-part series of our best bets list in small, medium and large kid versions. Here's part two: Medium-sized kids ages 6-10.

WHAT TO SEE (in theaters)
Enchanted - PG
Adorable fairy tale is a fabulous family flick.

Bee Movie - PG
Seinfeld comedy is cute fun for the whole family.

WHAT TO SEE (rent or buy)
Planet Earth Box Set
Ages: 5 and up

Rating: 5 stars (out of 5)

Price: $79.98

Stunning high-def series spotlights world wonders.
Never before have the world's many wonders been quite as accessible as they are in the stunning nature series Planet Earth. Filmed entirely in high definition with cutting-edge filmmaking techniques that allow unique, close-up views of animal behavior, this show is likely to both awe and inspire you. Ratatouille
Ages: 5 and up

Rating: 4 stars

Price: $29.99
Dig into Pixar's delicious, well-crafted rat tale.
At this point, it's pretty much a given that families and young children will line up to see anything made by Pixar, which seems incapable of producing a dud. But Ratatouille, like director Brad Bird's family adventure The Incredibles, is the rare animated film that could just as easily captivate an audience full of childless adults. WHAT TO READ
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
Ages: 8 and up

Rating:  5 Stars
Price: Hardcover $22.99
Spectacular book/film hybrid has heart.
This book is like nothing you've ever seen before. When you or your child first pick it up, it looks like one of those fantasies that are so popular these days. When you open it, it seems similar to a graphic novel. For the complete review, click here.

WHAT TO PLAY
Super Mario Galaxy
Ages: 7 and up
Rating: 5 stars

Price: $49.99
Platform: Wii
Fantastic outer space odyssey with coop play.
Everyone's favorite Italian plumber is back, and this time he is exploring the stars and beyond. The game makes creative use of the Wii's motion-sensitive controls to offer unique game play that is out of this world! Cooperative play makes it fun for two to play together. LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga
Ages: 8 and up
Rating: 5 stars

Price: $49.99
Platforms: Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, DS
Two LEGO Star Wars games for the price of one.
This combines the sleeper hit LEGO Star Wars and its award-winning sequel, LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy into one massive game that lets you move throughout the Star Wars universe found in the six movies. And for the first time, if you are on the Wii, your remote can become your lightsaber. With cooperative play options, families can feel the "force" together. For the complete review, click here.

WHAT TO LISTEN TO
Carnival Ride by Carrie Underwood
Ages: 8 and up
Rating: 4 stars

 Price: $18.97

Nice-girl country-pop from this Idol winner.
Underwood once again showcases her strong voice and emotive abilities. The single "Last Name" talks about drinking too much tequila, going to bed with someone, and waking up married to them—but will probably go over the heads of younger kids.

Class of 3000: Music Volume One by Andre 3000
Ages: 5 and up 5 Stars
Rating:

Price: $11.98
Family-safe music from a TV show doesn't talk down.
Based on Andre Benjamin's ultra-cool Cartoon Network animated show, this CD employs all the elements of appealing kids' music without ever being condescending. There are gently positive messages, clearly audible vocals, and lots of repetition. The devilish voice on "We Want Your Soul" might scare very young kids, though.

Tomorrow: tweens/teens
