Carnie Wilson on Gastric Bypass & Pregnancy

sign up for the momlogic newsletter Tweet This

Singer and mother of one advises on what should come first, the surgery or the baby.

A lot of people struggle with weight, and Carnie Wilson is no stranger to that battle. She was very public about her decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery years ago. After a successful surgery and great results, she found herself pregnant and gaining weight again. Is it wise to undergo gastric bypass before having children? Carnie speaks to Mom•Logic exclusively about this and how she dealt with the loose skin leftover after her weight loss.

I gained 30-40 lbs during preg. i am 5.5 yrs out of surgery. i have 20 lbs of baby fat remaining and can’t seem to get it off. i gained an extra 20 lbs that i didn’t want before my pregnancy , so i have 40 lbs. to get off. I used to eat very little, but after my pregnancy, i have a big appetite and feel hungry. i am scared i will gain it allllll back

Kathy,
Your story sounds exactly like mine. I too got pregnant about 5.5 years out. I had gained 10 lbs prior to that, and 20 more during pregnancy. I immediately lost all of the baby weight, but now 4 years later, I have gained it back plus an additional 20, totaling 40 to lose. It is awful, I too eat much more, and I feel like such a failure. I along with you can see myself gaining it all back. We have to remember though, We are much better than before the surgery. Just remember that and hang in there. Good Luck

There’s rules to follow regarding gastric bypass surgery. After years of complacency, a lot of us forget those simple rules:

1. Protein first (2/3) followed by complex carbs (in the forms of veggies and whole grains) (1/3);

2. don’t drink with your meals;

3. No snacking. If you need to eat - eat a small meal of protein & complex carbs.

4. Eliminate any other carbs from your diet (especially when you’re trying to lose the weight you’ve gained).

5. exercise

6. Drink your water - 64 oz minimum per day

If you want to join a group of women/men who came close to “failing” at bypass surgery - BUT who have overcome and relearned how to eat properly, taken control and are back on track - come on over to the livingafterwls.com. Most of us used the 5 day pouch test to get back in control. More info - go here: www.5daypouchtest.com

I am currently 10 months post op and have lost 95lbs. I did it mainly for Diabetes and all the other things that went along with it. My wife is currently about 2.5 years out and originally lost 103lbs and is having problems keeping the weight off. After attending support groups for over 3 years I saw that most, if not all, of the post ops were having problems keeping the weight off right around the 2 year mark. The surgery is just a tool for weight loss and is up to you to use it the way it was intended. We become complacent and start to go back to our old habits of “lack of will power”. Remember it’s 10 times as hard to take it off. Don’t start treating the surgery as just another ‘fad diet’ which we have all failed on before.

This weblog appears to recieve a good ammount of visitors. How do you advertise it? It offers a nice unique twist on things. I guess having something useful or substantial to post about is the most important factor.
