Kids are getting pissed that Moms (and even grandmothers) are invading TheirSpace.
CNN
reports that kids don't like it when adults log onto their social
networking sites, to which we say: Too bad, kids! If it's live on the
Internet, we get to see it, too!
They just don't think or care that half the world sees them in certain situations."
But to check up on her kids, Tanya doesn't create her own profile—she actually logs in, posing as one of her kids. "My kids can't go on the computer without telling me their password. I log on 'as them' several times a week. I have to monitor them—twice I had to delete a comment my son made. I don't want them calling anyone names. I told him I did it." As for monitoring her two oldest who live away at college, "If I don't hear from them, I may log on just to know they're OK. If I see they've been talking to people, I know they're safe."
Why doesn't Tanya get her own profile? "If adults make their presence known, kids will find somewhere else to go to. But if I am 'one of them,' I can see what's really going on. A few years back, I went to meetings where the DARE officer would talk about Internet safety. Right from the start, I told my kids this is my job. If I don't watch out for them, I wouldn't be doing my job. Everything I see on the news happening to kids online confirms what I'm doing is right."
