When is it OK to let kids play by themselves?
Sometimes, a topic comes up around the office here that gets Moms so fired up, we just have to post and get your opinion. We've all heard stories or even seen photos of kids doing funny, messy, and dangerous things when they're out of a parent's sight. And once in a while, an unattended child—who seems to be old enough to be left alone— is seriously hurt or worse when they're left to play by themselves. Which begs the question: At what point is it safe for children to be left alone to read, watch TV or play?
Karen, a mother of four from Massachusetts, says that the answer depends on the child. "Where I'd feel comfortable to answer a phone call or do a
| load of laundry with one child playing quietly, it isn't the case with
another. I know 2-year-olds I would trust alone more than some 4 or
5-year- olds. That being said, I still check in on my kids when they're
playing, and my oldest is 10 years old."
While some Moms argue that children under school-age should never be unsupervised, others allow toddlers as young as 12-18 months to play while they do a quick task. |
