Mom the Vote: New Hampshire

Mom•Logic hits New Hampshire to get the vibe among voting Moms.

Mom•Logic's in (surprisingly warm) NH today checking in with Mom voters and watching them make a difference in the country's first primary of '08. Residents here certainly take their state's “Live free or die” motto very seriously, especially when it comes to choosing parties. In fact, more of the state’s voters are Independents rather than either Republicans or Democrats. Who knew? We talked to some Moms on the NH street to get the buzz...

“The beauty of New Hampshire is that you can go from Independent to Democrat or Republican, then back to Independent in the same day,” says Carol Dennis, a Mom of two daughters and one son, who also has three grandchildren. She’s a registered Independent pushing for Barack Obama. Her husband Richard, also Independent, is more likely to sway Republican. “You can walk in as undeclared, say, ‘I want to vote in the Republican or Democratic primary,’ and sign a declaration. When you walk out you just say ‘undeclare me’ and you sign a form, and you go back to being an Independent. My husband and I cancel each other out with our votes.” Wow, here we thought it was just as easy as voting.

And get this - because the state’s primary is first and the candidates want to get the message out, residents can actually see and meet candidates at Town Hall-type meetings, small rallies and even house parties. “You can meet them and see them up close,” says Pat Hadley, a grandmother of six who recently moved to New Hampshire from neighboring Massachusetts. “They’re in all the small towns, and in New Hampshire, candidates really shake your hand. In Massachusetts, they just don’t do that.” We would love to share a bottle of wine with Hill, Barack, or even Mitt.

When it comes to actually voting, experience rules with some Moms. Pat, a Democrat, predicts Obama will rule NH, but she'll be going Hillary all the way. “I’m tired of voting for candidates who say they’re going to do all these great things and then they don’t do any better than the ones before them. The younger people are clearly for Obama. But I like the idea of a woman president. I’m voting for Hillary.”

There you have it.
