Momagers: Managing Kids Into the Ground?

Celebrities face the positive and negatives of Moms who run their careers.

The MTV series Life of Ryan is about pro skateboarder Ryan Sheckler and his manager Mom, Gretchen, who tries to parent her 18-year-old son while managing his career. As if being a Mom isn't hard enough, add pro-sports, endorsement deals, and a reality show--forget it.

Is it a good idea for Mom to manage a kid's career? When Lindsay Lohan's mother was her manager, in 2007 alone she crashed her car, entered rehab twice, and went after her assistant in a car chase! Jamie Lynn Spears and big sister, Britney, both managed by Mom Lynne-- enough said. Everyone advises not to mix money and family. No one epitomizes that more than Aaron Carter, who sued his mother for stealing his money. And remember Gary Coleman's public battle with his parents over the mismanagement of his trust fund?

But not all Moms make for bad managers. Kanye West spoke passionately about the close bond he shared with his Mom. Their partnership helped guide him to his massive achievements as a recording artist and entrepreneur.  Deborah Gibson's Mom acts as her manager and steered her in the right direction for her entire career, which included her teen years when most stars go bad. We asked her what specifically made her mother, Diana, a good manager. "Being a manager is more about the emotional side than the business side. My mom is a great deal maker and negotiator, but beyond that, she's in tune with my mental and emotional state at all times and what feeds me creatively. Some managers are all about the money. My mom gets, and has always gotten, that being a sane whole person is what's most important, and from there all the great career stuff will come!" Gibson feels so strongly about her mother's abilities, she's enlisted her to teach a master class to parents at Camp Electric Youth, her soon-to-be launched camp for kids seeking a career in show business.
