With the New Hampshire primary just one day away, a USA Today/Gallup poll shows Senator Barack Obama leading rival Senator Hillary Clinton by double digits (41 percent to 28 percent); John Edwards is a distant third at 19 percent. Senator John McCain is leading the Republican pack with 34 percent, over Mitt Romney at 30 percent and Iowa caucus winner Mike Huckabee at 13 percent.
Books, TV & Websites Are Replacing Birthing Classes
Lamaze classes used to be popular with expectant parents, but that appears to be changing. According to a recent study from the nonprofit group Childbirth Connection, most moms and dads today prefer stay-at-home lessons to group classes. Only 10 percent of first-time mothers studied said childbirth classes were important; the majority said they turned to cable TV birthing shows, books, the Internet, and their doctors for information.
Small Kids Shouldn't Eat Big Fish
To avoid a buildup of dangerously high levels of mercury in their growing bodies, children under six should eat small fish instead of larger species such as catfish, marlin, and swordfish, according to a study published in The Medical Journal of Australia. “Even at relatively low levels, mercury can affect children’s neural and mental development,” says study co-author Dr. Stephen Corbett.
Thinner Couples Have Better Sex
A Readers Digest poll has found that losing even a few pounds can improve your sex life. "Weight causes inhibitions," says health director Julie Bain. Surprisingly, the men polled proved to be just as self-conscious about their bodies as the women: 42 percent of them said they would only go without a shirt in the privacy of their own home, and 45 percent said that losing weight would put the fire back into their love lives.
Woman Kicked Out of Army for Having Breast Implants
Alessija Dorfmann, a 23-year-old recruit in the German army, was recently booted from her country's training program after it was determined that her silicone breast implants posed an increased risk of injury. “I am devastated," says Dorfmann. "It has always been my dream to be a soldier and have a great figure. Now my fake boobs have cost me my job.”
