School photos get a makeover--but is it a good idea to revise history?

For us, school picture day means finding a clean shirt and a hairbrush "the morning of." But we're now hearing that more and more school photographers offer retouching and airbrushing services for school photos.

But we're now hearing that more and more school photographers offer retouching and airbrushing services for school photos.

Minnesota-based Lifetouch offers $6 acne and blemish zapping. But other portrait studios go even further--fixing crooked teeth, removing braces, and even cutting and pasting eyes from one student's photo to another to avoid that "droopy eye" look. photo to another to avoid that "droopy eye" look. Is this getting creepy to anyone else? Honestly, if kids' yearbook photos all look perfect, what do they have to look forward to?

"There are no limits on what we airbrush. I just did a kid who was missing a tooth and had braces. I fix everything--a bra strap showing or anything else I see," said Ruthann Gonfer, operations manager for Events To Go, a photography studio located in Cape Canaveral, Fla. "I just want the [kids] to be happy with their photos."

High school seniors are the target audiences for extreme airbrushing, according to Gonfer, whose company offers large, elaborate photo packages where seniors have their pics taken on the beach like fashion models. These packages run as much as $500, but all airbrushing fees are included.

While it's true of course that this strategy saves kids the humiliation we endured of of having our unibrows, braces and zits immortalized on film. But does this send the message to kids that they're supposed to look perfect? Hmm.

What is the fun of school photos IF you can not look back years later and say…..”What was I thinking that day?” We NEVER had touch up/ air brush and I get my old pictures out and laugh my head off at them. I would not allow my child to have his/her photo touched up either. For one thing, this is a bit “vain” for Middle School/ High School students! After all, they are KIDS, these are not their head shots for America’s Next Top Model! Thanks

Debbie, I think you are mistaken.
For example if a first grader happens to fall the day before pictures and scapes their face, having the option to remove the scratch is wonderfull. A lot of parents want a nice picture to display, put in Christmas cards or send as gifts to Grandparents and family.

I have to disagree with Debbie. I think the re-touching technology is great, especially for high school seniors. I don’t think it’s vain at all, I mean come on, what’s wrong with wanting to have a nice senior picture to look back on. I think if you have the choice between a picture with a pimple on your face, or a picture without the pimple your going to choose the one without the pimple.
