The Coital Headache

We knew great sex delivered orgasms...but headaches, too?

When you hear the words sex and headache in the same sentence, "Not tonight, honey, I have a headache," automatically comes to mind. But it turns out there is another kind of headache associated with sex...as in, the sex's so intense, it gives you a headache. According to MSNBC and Health magazine,"coital headaches" can occur during foreplay or right before orgasm, and typically last from a few minutes to an hour. (But if it's your first orgasmic headache, it could be pointing to an underlying condition such as an aneurysm, so check in with your doctor.)

Stephen Silberstein, MD, director of the Jefferson Headache Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia tells Health that a coital headache is "probably a type of exertion headache." So much pressure builds up in the head and neck muscles during arousal, your head begins to pound. Hmm. Does that mean we're going to have to revise our excuse to "Not tonight honey, I don't WANT a headache?"

OY! I have recently become familiar with this phenomenon, and I am not happy about it. My doctors are unfamiliar with it and I am navigating the research on this on my own. And it doe not bode well for marital happiness.

One word. Aspirin.

And trust me — aspirin doesn’t help. Think of it as an ice pick through the forehead — not something acetaminophen will really help.

Sex headaches started a few years ago for me. They are really painful. I thought that I was having an aneurysm the first time that it happened. Aspirin-fioricet-Imitrex-nothing helps. The orgasm that brought it on was usually super intense. Sometimes I would have to hold my head to finish.

There’s actually a name for this phenomenom — coital cephalalgia. It’s far more common in men than in women, and in my case at least, it’s frighteningly intense and frighteningly sudden. Thank heavens, they’re only occasional.
