For the Chick in Us

PBS airs adaptations of Austen's completed works.

PBS began its series The Complete Jane Austen last Sunday with an adaptation of Persuasion, and will continue for the 12 Sundays. Don't tell anyone but some of us in the office are just suckers for a romantic Jane Austen flick. (PBS politely calls us "enthusiasts") On Feb. 10, they'll air the BBC version of Pride & Prejudice with Colin Firth. Anything that guy does makes us happy like little schoolgirls but as Mr. Darcy, he just makes Valentine's Day that much sweeter.

Firth, now better known as Mark Darcy (must have a thing for the name) from Bridget Jones' Diary, apparently incited mass hysteria when the adaptation originally aired in the U.S. on A&E in '95. We giggled a bit when one ML staffer swooned: "My mom told me to watch the original miniseries, never guessing how much I would fall in love with Austen. There's nothing better than Mr. Darcy declaring to Elizabeth that he "ardently loves and admires" her.

Check out tonight's Northanger Abbey with your daughter— you may just find you have a new Austen nut on your hands.

There’s another BBC miniseries out there that will make you love it’s hero just as much (dare I say - if not more) than Mr. Darcy. It’s called North and South (not the Civil War one). And it’s AMAZING!! I watched it twice in 5 days - it’s 4 hours long

Rubbish. Ask anyone in the UK who was in N & S or what it was about - there would be very few who could tell you - I certainly couldn’t. On the other hand ask anyone about P & P and who played Mr Darcy in the BBC version, and there is hardly a person who wouldn’t know.

Ha! Very cool entry…we posted a blog entry on this very subject last week and were subjected to all kinds of ridicule from friends/family for admitting 1) we like Jane Austen and 2) we watch PBS. Didn’t realize there was so much shame in admitting you like good literature and good movie adaptations of said literature. Glad to see someone else posted on this subject!

I’m not saying P&P isn’t great or more familiar - it is!! I’m just saying N&S is definitely worth watching if you like P&P. Not trying to start a grand debate, just wanted to get the word out….
