PBS airs adaptations of Austen's completed works.
PBS began its series The Complete Jane Austen last Sunday with an adaptation of Persuasion, and will continue for the 12 Sundays. Don't tell anyone but some of us in the office are just suckers for a romantic Jane Austen flick. (PBS politely calls us "enthusiasts") On Feb. 10, they'll air the BBC version of Pride & Prejudice with Colin Firth. Anything that guy does makes us happy like little schoolgirls but as Mr. Darcy, he just makes Valentine's Day that much sweeter.
Firth, now better known as Mark Darcy (must have a thing for the name) from Bridget Jones' Diary, apparently incited mass hysteria when the adaptation originally aired in the U.S. on A&E in '95. We giggled a bit when one ML staffer swooned: "My mom told me to watch the original miniseries, never guessing how much I would fall in love with Austen. There's nothing better than Mr. Darcy declaring to Elizabeth that he "ardently loves and admires" her.
Check out tonight's Northanger Abbey with your daughter— you may just find you have a new Austen nut on your hands.
