One Mom's tragedy made us stop and take action.
The tragedy: A six-year-old boy died after a large television set fell on top of him, reports ABC-7. The coroner said that the boy was climbing up and reaching for ice skates on top of the TV.
Take action: Heavy television sets placed upon dressers or entertainment centers can be deadly for tots if they topple over. The Consumer Product Safety Commission received reports of 36 TV tip-over-related deaths and 65 furniture tip-over deaths from 2000 to 2005. More than 80% of all these deaths involved young children. Anchor all entertainment units, TV stands, bookcases, shelving and bureaus to the wall using appropriate hardware, such as brackets, screws, or toggles. The Anti-Tip Furniture Strap 2-Pack is $3.95, and can be ordered here. Then, anchor the TV to the dresser with these Safety Straps, which run $14.95.
