Mom tells how her 15-month old son made an incredible recovery after nearly drowning.

Mom•Logic: What happened?

Maria: My 15-month-old son, Michael, nearly drowned. My mother was at my house taking care of Michael and my three daughters, ages 3, 4, and 7. When she had her back turned, Michael must have gone outside through the screen door and closed it behind him.

When she couldn't find Michael, she looked all over the house and then looked outside. Michael was floating in the middle of the pool. She jumped in and grabbed him, then tried to shake him to wake him up. She ran to a neighbor's house for help. The mailman heard screaming and rushed to the backyard. He started doing CPR on Michael. By that point, they had reached 911, and the paramedics arrived shortly.

Mom•Logic: When you arrived at the hospital, what was Michael's condition?

Maria: One of the nurses told me, "We're sorry, but he's not responding, but we're still working on him." I kept saying, "Why?" I thought he was already gone. About an hour later, they told me they had hope, there was a heartbeat. I knew everything was going to be okay because he was alive. At that point, I just wanted him to be alive. I went in to see him. He was laying on the gurney and he was pale with no color. It was not him. He was very cold and not breathing on his own.

From the beginning, they told me his first 72 hours were the most critical. It was a matter of waiting. They thought if Michael survived he'd have brain damage. His heart wasn't beating and he wasn't breathing for the first hour he was in the emergency room. Tests performed hours later showed he had no sign of brain activity. I didn't really care what condition he would be in, I just wanted him to be alive. At the hospital, they kept preparing me for the worst. Now, I know faith does move mountains. The whole community rallied around him; they call him Miracle Michael. It's amazing to see how many people my son has touched.

Mom•Logic: When did the "miracle" occur?

Maria: After about a week, the doctor took him off life support and he started reacting by himself. After a day, the medication wore off and he started responding, moving his legs, opening his eyes, squeezing my finger and hand. The nurses came running with doctors--they couldn't believe it. They did an MRI. They had big smiles and said they couldn't believe it, but all the tests were okay and he had no brain damage. After a week of therapy, the therapists told me he was a normal little boy, he was running, climbing, eating, and talking like he was doing before. They discharged him three days after.

Mom•Logic: What message do you want to share with other Moms?

Maria: If you have a pool or any standing body of water, make sure you have safety locks, gates, or alarms over the pools or doors. Look into any safety devices as precaution because this could happen to anybody. I was concerned about the pool, but we usually never go into the backyard and the sliding door is always locked. If it could happen to me, it could happen to you.

I’m glad the little boy is okay, but there are some glaring issues with this story. “They thought if Michael survived he’d have brain damage because he didn’t have oxygen for over an hour and a half.” Actually, brain damage occurs in a matter of 3 minutes and anything over 10 minutes pretty much ensures brain damage/death. If Michael did in fact survive this long sans brain damage, he truly is a miracle.

And really I’m not trying to be heartless or a no-it-all but, “My 15-month-old son, Michael, nearly drowned to death.” What??

Again, very, very glad the baby is okay…just couldn’t help but point out rough spots in the interview.

Unlike the three people who actually agreed to the above comment, I am just grateful to God that the little boy is alive. Forget the semantics !

Interesting post. Enjoyable and fun reading. I’ve just got one observation to give about t-shirts.
