A True Mama's Boy

A son sacrifices his hoop dreams for Mom. Would your kid do that?

When Carlys Coble was diagnosed with breast cancer last June, her son Kevin, a 20-year-old basketball star at Northwestern University (who many say is headed for an NBA career), put college and basketball on hold to care for his mother. "Kevin said, 'Mom, I am not going back to school,'" Carlys told Mom•Logic. "If you know Kevin, that was that."

It was role reversal for Carlys and Kevin. "I have always been the one to do for others, but I had to say okay, they are here to help me, and I am going to let them."  Now that Carlys' prognosis is good, Kevin has returned to the college life. "Kevin would love to play in the NBA," Carlys says. "And I will do whatever I can to support him in his dream. I am incredibly proud of him and would do anything for him."

We were touched by their story. But it also made us wonder, how did she raise a kid to be so compassionate— we can barely get our teen boys to take out the trash.
