If Your Child is Arrested ...

What Moms need to tell teens before someone gets jailed.

As we reported, earlier this week 18-year-old Barron Hilton, Paris' little brother, was arrested for DUI. And now TMZ is reporting Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal's son, Redmond, was arrested for DUI and drug possession.  What should a Mom tell her child if she gets That Call? For advice, we turned to criminal attorney Paul Goldberger:

Keep your mouth shut: Don't say anything to anyone from the moment you are taken into police custody, other than to ask for a lawyer.

Be respectful: Antagonizing the police will only make the situation worse.

Retain a lawyer: Have a lawyer on standby before anything happens (teens should keep the number in their wallet). If a family member is arrested, you want to be able to call someone immediately.

but if we help our kids they will never understand that they have to put their act together and be responsible they will always think that mommy and daddy will bail them out

embarassingly enough. I used to be one of those teens that mom and dad had to ‘bail’ out. But the sad truth is, no one can completely ‘bail’ out their kids. It stays on your record which makes getting a job that pays the bills hard enough, much less getting a job that pays the bills and holiday/birthday gifts for the grandchildren. Maybe my parents paid the ‘bail’ money, but to erase a state jail sentece no money can do that.

Keep the lawyers number in your wallet?? Arent you just telling kids “I know you’re going to do something wrong, and will eventually get caught, so here is what you do!!” Crazy!! Teach them morals, and responsibility, not how to get out of the wrong they’ve created!!

When I was a teenager many years ago, my Dad told my brother & I, if we ever ended up in jail, not to waste the money for a phone call, because he wouldn’t bail us out, and we knew he meant it. We never did have to find out however. I think they call that fear motivation, which probably isn’t politically correct today, but it sure worked for us.
