From the lips of an OCD Mom: Germs are the enemy.

Using conventional household cleaners endangers kids by exposing them to toxic chemicals and upping the risk of asthma and wheezing, according to a study released by Alliance For a Healthy Tomorrow. Here are Mom and EcoFabulous editor-in-chief Zem Joaquin's quick and not-so-dirty tips for cleaning 'green':

  • Quick n' Easy: If you're looking for an OTC solution to the problem, Zem swears by Method products and Shaklee as a bleach alternative. For those who want to scrub and do good simultaneously, try Greenwood Naturals. All profits go toward a school tuition assistance fund.
  • Evil Ingredients: Avoid ammonia as well as fragrances that don't explain what the "smell" comes from.
  • Calling all Mom DIYers: Zem recommends using distilled vinegar as an all-purpose cleaner (great for disinfecting your washing machine!) and baking soda as a bleach alternative. Just put a tablespoon of baking soda where the bleach goes.
