Martian Without a Mommy

Mom•Logic reviews Martian Child, out on DVD today.
Martian Child
Rated: PG. Stars: John Cusack, Joan Cusack, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt and Angelica Huston. Running time: 107 minutes Distributor: New Line
The story: Cusack, a widowed sci-fi author, adopts a child who thinks he's a Martian. Can they become a family?
Good for Moms: The quippy banter and boyish charm Cusack perfected in Say Anything remains...20 years later.
Good for kids: Older children may relate to the boy feeling misunderstood by parents, other adults and kids.
Watch out: There's teasing, name-calling and a discussion of death after a beloved pet dies.
Bottom line: Although the movie is about a 7-year-old kid, it's not really for little kids, especially those under 10. While not overly disturbing, it's talky in a grown-up way that won't hold their interest. The all-star cast is appealing for adults, but be warned, the movie often veers into tear-jerker territory.
