When Tots Trash the House

Is it possible to have nice furniture post-baby?

baby_furniture.jpg

Is buying nice furniture when you have small children an investment or insane? That's the question the New York Times explored recently. Many parents profiled had children later in life, so they already had tons expensive furniture. Soon, tots were trashing their treasures by spilling yogurt on Shantung window treatments or carving their names into cherrywood dining room tables. Ouch.

But MotherhoodLater.com co-founder Robin Gorman Newman, told Mom•Logic that she purchased her furniture with babies in mind. "For example, our living room couch has a rust tapestry print that hides stains fairly well. We'll wait until our son gets older before purchasing furniture we love."

After you had kids, how did your decorating style change?

We had to completely empty our living room once our son began walking. We bought microfiber couches that resist staining and haven’t had a problem with them yet! I can no longer display photos or knick-knacks on the shelving unit made especially for that- and our living room rug is no longer carpet, but matchbox cars.

Design Within Reach and kids don’t mix, it’s all about Ikea when junior arrives. If it get’s stained or broken you can chuck it without chucking all your cash as well.
