6-Year-Old Suspended for Mohawk

Mom is outraged when kid gets kicked out of kindergarten.

Ohio Mom Michelle Barile decided to enroll her son, Bryan, in a new school after the Parma Community School decided his mohawk violated school policy. After they claimed Bryan's hair was a class disruption, Michelle told the Associated Press, "I understand they have a dress code. I understand he has a uniform. But this is total discrimination...they can't tell me how I can cut his hair." Can they?

I cannot believe 59% of people are saying that suspending a little kid for ANY kind of haircut was justified! Insanity…

I agree. A haircut doesnt determine what kind of person your kid will be or what grades he would have…so its definitely descrimination. There are bigger fish to fry in schools and in this world than a haircut.

If a haircut is a distraction, so is a shirt with jewels, or brand new Jordans that just came out. This school is ridiculous! I agree with Crystal, THERE ARE BIGGER FISH TO FRY IN SCHOOLS THAN A HAIRCUT!

The mom was repeatedly warned not to do it & did it anyway, so a suspension was totally justified.

Traci March 1, 2008, 6:44 PM

why because schools should be allowed to tell us what our children are supposed to look like? What’s next?

school requires a uniform. thats just the way it is. she should choose a different school if she wants to give him a mohawk.

The mom should be suspended.

BirdsFly March 3, 2008, 2:39 PM

The school had nothing in it’s dress policy against the haircut, if they had a problem they should have ammended the dress code for next year. I live in Parma.. I really hope I’m elsewhere when my child is old enough for school.

As for comment made by lirpa2486 who wrote:

That is completely rediculous. Warning or not we are allowed to and have the right to a little individuality! We are not all robots walking around. I think the schools are way too involved with this. My son is 2 and has had a mowhawk for almost a year! No one will tell me how I can or cannot cut any of my kids hair. Totally outrageous!

I just gave my son a mohawk. He is in pre-school. I would be damned if someone told me he couldn’t have that haircut. Its actually history because the indians were the first to have that hair cut. I would be outraged!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

There are rules we have to live by in soceitey, to let things go smoothly. If they say it is O.K. for him to have a mohawk then it would be O.K. for an older child to have a bald head and tattoos and show his hate for minorities. Why is it cute for a 6 year old to have a mohawk and it is not so cute when a 17 year old with a mohawk and piercings all over his face? I really don’t get it. Cut his hair that way in the summer, not during school-time. Duh!!!!

Traci March 6, 2008, 4:45 PM

that is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. mohawks are equivalent to hate?? Get a grip

lirpa2486 March 6, 2008, 5:38 PM

jerie - my point was not that the kid shouldn’t have individuality. my point was that the mother knew beforehand that it was unacceptable to the school & did it anyway, so the consequences were enforced. if she didn’t like the warning, then she could have found another school before it escalated to a suspension. i love mohawks & as soon as my son is old enough (he’s only 18 months) he’ll have one too.

btw - it’s ridiculous…

Marty March 6, 2008, 9:03 PM

The school shouldn’t punish a 5-year-old the the haircut his mother gave him. He’s five years old, he didn’t drive to the barbershop and get it for himself, and the haircut isn’t hurting anything. If the teacher doesn’t make a big deal over it, any distraction value will be gone in an hour. The mom, on the other hand, should quit using a little kid to push her own “Ooh, look at me, I’m such a rebel” attention-hogging agenda. He’s a kid, not a fashion accessory. Save the mohawks and Harley t-shirts for yourself, mom.

I was bullied really badly throughout school, bullies should be the ones getting kicked out of school. Not little boys who want to express their individuality. Schools are getting ridiculous, children are taught now not to defend themselves (verbally) and to be submissive when another is cruel. Haircuts are the least of their worries. Pathetic.

Here is something to think about….

Would your boss let you have a mohawk? I highly doubt it. While I don’t think that a hair style warrants being suspended, the mother is teaching her son that he only has to follow some of the rules. That is my problem with her. Suppose he doesn’t like one of her rules in ten years?

Stop whining about a position you put yourself in, and do something about. Open a mohawk friendly school!
