Mary Sharkey says, "I'm not a doctor, I'm a Mom who has walked the walk."

Mom fans of Dirty Dancing were sad to hear that Patrick Swayze has pancreatic cancer, a disease that is expected to hit as many as 37,000 people this year. We reached out to Mary Sharkey, Mom and pancreatic cancer survivor, for her advice to Patrick:

Stay positive: "Avoid statistics and negativity. Focus on staying positive, being healthy and using your energy to fight the disease."

Communicate: "Work with your oncologist and ask questions. Stay on top of things and what's going on in the medical community."

Use the buddy system: "You're a person, you're not a number," said Sharkey, who said that Patrick can call her if he needs a pep talk. "God bless him and his family; your family is what keep you going. It is a fight but I am sitting here, thank God."

Dear Patrick: My prayers are with you and family. Stay strong and have faith in God. If you are not there yet; please find a Bible Fellowship Church and direct all your thoughts and energies towards the Creator of Heaven and Earth. He can be your source of strength and will. May God bless you throughout this ordeal. He is able.

Dear Patrick:

I don’t know if you will ever get a chance to read this, but if you do, please know how much you are valued and appreciated. I always admired your tenacity to stay honest and true in an industry known for its exploitation. You’ve always been a fighter, so throughout your life you have acquired the tools you need for this latest challenge in your life. Many sincere people worldwide now wish you well, and so do I - the very best possible outcome that can happen. But the most important folks thankfully are your wife who loves you, and immediate family and peer support all around you. Even in this there are blessings, and I am so glad you have them.

Hello,
We just had a family member die of this cancer. My brothers, both physicians, understand that this is a disheartening diagnosis. We talked about how to survive and it’s not as easy as it sounds but I will tell you what they said. They had a few patients listen and some that gave up the fight.
Don’t give up the fight and believe the disease will rule your mind. Have you wife and others continue to struggle with their strength.
Eat - This is most important. You will hate food and the pain it causes, but food will fight the disease and often times beat the disease. Just force yourself to eat. It’s your lifeline.
Live - You will at some point, want to give up. Keep positive, keep active and eat. Get those calories in. Keep those calories coming. Eat high caloric foods. If you want to talk more, e-mai me at lilakaroub@yahoo.com. I will hook you up to brothers who can tell you more.

Patrick, DO NOT GIVE UP

You know how serious Pancreatic Cancer is however I think that state of mind is key in the battle you are fighting.

The greatest and finest hour for you was when you shared with Barbara Walters your feelings and your battle and let the world know how you are doing. Those few moments on the air says volumes about the fine man you are Patrick.

I know at times you must want to scream out loud and vent your anger and frustrations with this disease. Do it and do it often … vent it all as it helps, truly helps.

If you ever need an “outsider” to just to talk with, please email me or call me, I will provide you with my private cell number via email … I am at my Florida home currently.

Without going into detail, trust that I know and understand what you are going through.

Know also that I remember you each week at Mass on Saturdays and pray you will beat this.

Best personal regards,

William
