Mom•Logic spoke with a Mom going through a terrifying ordeal.
Mom•Logic: When and where was Nick last seen?
Natalie: Nick was last seen at 11:05 pm on Tuesday, February 5, 2008. He was walking to his Middlebury College dorm room.
Mom•Logic: When did you realize something was wrong?
Natalie: I knew something was wrong Friday morning. Thursday evening, my 9-year-old son, Damon, tried to call Nick, but he didn't respond with a call or text message. When Nick didn't respond to his brother by the next morning, I knew something was wrong because that was unlike Nick. I tried calling Nick, text-messaging him, emailing him, and Friday night, I called campus security because I couldn't reach him. I felt like an overprotective mother, but I knew this was unlike Nick. On Saturday, campus security sent officers to go into Nick's room. They said he wasn't in there and nothing looked suspicious.
Mom•Logic: As a Mom, how are you handling this?
Natalie: I pray for the strength every day to get out of bed and do something, so I can keep my head level. I can't break down. I am only gaining strength knowing I have to find my son and stay in the right frame of mind. I can't mourn the loss of him because I don't know what's happened to him, and I can't miss him knowing I might never see his face, hold his hand, or hear his voice. I can't let my mind go there during the day because it's paralyzing. I can't think properly and the pain is so great. I pray every day God gives me the strength to ask the right questions, and I am grateful for the many good people working on the case. Many are volunteers, and I appreciate them.
Mom•Logic: What do you want other Moms to know?
Natalie: I would want them to know you have to be an advocate for your child. You have to be involved in the search and let people know who your child is. Also, just know the grace of friendship. Other Moms, friends, and parents have been there for me, and it's that kind of care and love people have for my son and family that gives me an ounce of energy to let me move on to the next step. I can cross things off my list, and they help me move forward. It's heartfelt, and I am grateful.
