What's the connection between Disney princesses and baby names?

Jeri Ryan announced this week that she's named her baby girl Giselle. This sparked office discussion about our daughters' fascination with Princess Giselle from Disney's recent hit Enchanted—the movie that had girls everywhere dreaming of living happily ever after. But are some Moms just grown up little girls who live their fantasies by naming their daughters after royal characters?

According to Jennifer Moss, CEO of Babynames.com, Moms are kind of picky about their princess names. She says Mulan, Belle, Cinderella and Snow White never hit the top 1000 names in the U.S. However, Ariel and Jasmine  have been crowned winners by Moms.

The name popularity for Ariel was definitely affected by The Little Mermaid, which was released in 1989," Jennifer explains. "The name jumped from #210 in 1989 to #94 in 1990. The name Jasmine was already becoming popular (top 100 names) by the time the movie came out—which means Disney most likely chose the name because it was already a popular Persian-American girl's name and was identifiable for both cultures."

I love the movie The Little Mermaid, I’m not surprised that name Ariel become popular after this movie.

Jeri & Christophe chose Gisele (one “l” only) before the film came out. They wanted a French name that would work in the States as well.
