After reading over the ‘how much of your past do you share with your kids’ article I realized how many moms think rampant sex and drug use is a thing of the past. many moms talk about how growing up in the sixties ‘everyone was doing it’ or ‘we didn’t know then what we know now’. Well I am a young mom. I am 20 years old and a first time mother of a 3 month old. my high school days are not very far behind me. now I grew up with D.A.R.E in school and I knew what all the studies said about drugs, alcohol, sex and cigarettes. still I experimented heavily with all of them. I’m not proud of it, and looking back I was just a stupid kid, but I wasn’t the only one. I say this, not to justify my doing it, but to warn you. everyone is still doing it. your high schoolers are under enormous peer pressure. sex and drugs are still every bit as big an issue now as they were in the 60’s and the 70’s and the 80’s and the 90’s if not bigger. I don’t know what I will tell Lillia when she is old enough to ask these questions and deal with these issues, but I do know that I will not underestimate how much pressure she is under. it isn’t any easier being a teenager today than it was 20 years ago and my guess is that 20 years from now it won’t be easy either.
