We took the kids to see College Road Trip this weekend, and it's a film that's fun for the whole family. I've  loved Raven Simone since The Cosby Show, and I became a devoted That's So Raven and Cheetah Girls fan right along with my daughter. Simone is such a great role model for young girls, and it's refreshing to see her play an intelligent and determined young adult attempting to gain admission to Georgetown University in D.C. while her controlling dad (Martin Lawrence) tries to steer her toward Northwestern, just 45 minutes from their Chicago home.

While the film is perfect for kids—the trained pig was quite the scene stealer—I loved the relationship shared between father and daughter. Lawrence epitomizes the father who embarrasses his teen daughter at every turn, but in the end, she still loves him and will always be his little girl. Even Donny Osmond provided us with some laugh-out-loud moments with his over-the-top showtune singing.

There was even a scene that had my eyes watering as I thought about my own daughter. Sure, she's only 8—but time flies by so fast. Before I turn around, she, too, will one day be contemplating her own college future. In fact, after the movie, I asked if she'd go away to school when she's older, and she announced she wanted to stay close to home. For my sake, I hope she never changes her mind, but somehow, I think that just like this movie, we'll be waving her off to school somewhere far away.

If you're a parent of a teen about to enter college, would you prefer they stay close to home or would you let them be independent and attend an out-of-state school?

I’m excited first of all to see a movie with a young educated African-Americans. There aren’t enough of them.
