Restaurants' desperate attempts to get family business can be a good thing for us all.

Since families are eating out less, chains like KFC have created Web sites like Bringbackdinner.com to woo us back. Bennigan's is offering children's books, Etch-A-Sketch-es and video games to keep kids entertained and even toss in a
$5 coupon.

You want our business so bad, restaurants? May we suggest:

•High chairs with seatbelts that are not crusted over with the regurgitated food of a million toddlers?

•Something other than crayons so coated in wax they don't mark paper.

•A placemat (that accompanies said crayons) that has space for actual coloring. An 18-month old can't do Sudoku, people.

•Kids meals that are actually kid-size.

• And would it be too much to ask for a waitperson who isn't repulsed by our existence before we even open our mouths?
