Is Guitar Hero III OK for First Graders?

Mom•Logic's Julie says: My 7-year-old son is absolutely obsessed with his new video game, and that has me worried!

A 16-year-old recently made headlines for making it into the Guinness Book of World Records for his Guitar Hero prowess. The teen, Chris Chike of Rochester, set the record for the highest single-song score on the popular video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. According to the Associated Press, his 97% completion rate on the game's most difficult song, the seven-minute "Through Fire and Flames," earned more than 840,000 points, almost doubling the old record.

I read this story with particular interest because my 7-year-old son just received Guitar Hero III for the Wii last weekend. And he is already obsessed! On Tuesday after school, my husband surprised him with an impromptu trip to the movies. When they pulled up to the theater, my son said he didn't want to go to the movies--he wanted to go home to play Guitar Hero! My husband was shocked, especially since he'd been begging to see The Spiderwick Chronicles for weeks. What sort of magnetic hold did this game have over our child?

I'm also a bit disturbed by the song selection on the game. Is it OK for my first grader to be rocking out to Rage Against the Machine? On Wednesday, my son had to bring his favorite song to the classroom for share day. He chose "Slow Ride" by Foghat, his new favorite song on Guitar Hero. As I downloaded it from iTunes and burned it to CD, I cringed a little, imagining his teacher's reaction when this began to play. I imagined the other kids bringing in The Wiggles and Laurie Berkner. Then, there's my kid with Foghat. I'm not someone who exactly likes to follow the crowd, but still...

What do you think, Moms? Is Guitar Hero III inappropriate for first graders, or do I just need to lighten up?
