Kiddy Manicures and Me

Guest blogger Rolemommy weighs in on growing beauty trend among young girls.

It's been in the news recently that more and more little girls are having primping and polish parties starting at age 6. Well I, for one, have a confession to make. My daughter has been getting manicures since she was 3. Does that make me a bad mom? I don't think so. For me, it's been a great way to take my daughter along when I needed to get my nails done for an important meeting or an event that required a hint of polish to make me look presentable.

But a funny thing happened on the way to the nail salon. My daughter became quite a hit with the nail ladies. In fact, whenever I've sneaked away to the salon without her, they ask me over and over again, "Where's Rebecca?" "When are you going to bring her in?" "We just love your daughter."

Yes, my daughter has become quite the social butterfly at Sophia's Nails. And in the past year, she's even convinced me to let her get a pedicure. I acquiesced, but we only do that on special occasions. Rebecca has also attended a bunch of beauty birthday parties, so she is quite "in the know" on the must-have colors for winter and spring. At home, she has tried to experiment with my eye shadow, and has attempted to slap some blush on her cheeks, but that's where I draw the line. No make-up and no pierced ears for a few more years. And if she sneaks on some lipstick that she borrows from her grandma's purse, I'll let it slide, but won't let her make a habit out of it.

So what's my take on the growing number of girls getting pedicures or having primping parties when they're so young? I say, it's fun to be pampered at any age--just don't make a habit of those jaunts to the salon, because suddenly, while your nails are in complete disrepair, your daughter will be demanding it's time for a manicure the minute she chips her polish.

My daughter also gets her nails done. 2 weeks ago I took her to the salon to get her hair and nails done for a father daughter dance that evening. This made her feel special!
