Getting Kids to Keep the Faith

Guest blogger and friend of Mom•Logic Rabbi Sherre Hirsch, reacts to a study that says 28% of adults abandon their religion.

How do Moms who wish to, have their kids embrace faith rather than regard it as a chore?

Make it fun: Let your children make the rituals you already practice their own. For example, on Passover, my kids are not so interested in reading the whole story of the Exodus. When we get to the part when we remember the plagues, we throw ping pong balls to represent hail and decorate the table with stuffed animal frogs. Then we sing our hearts out until past their bedtimes.

Bring it home: Don't make religion an extracurricular activity--something you have to go out for, get dressed for or always be on your best behavior for. Have art, books, rituals and prayer in your home.

Be honest about your faith. When they ask what you believe, don't just toe the party line. Encourage their questions about God so they can safely explore and grow with their faith for the rest of their lives.

Friends of mine who have kids use a CD series called God Rocks. It helps to help them memorize scriptures, as well as it’s fun for the kids to sing along to:).
