Following the news of a Kentucky mother who allegedly murdered her kids, Friend of Mom•Logic Counseling Mom discusses moms on the brink.
After Louisville resident Gail Lynn Coontz was charged with killing her 14-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter, Mom•Logic asked Counseling Mom, Rosanne Tobey, for her perspective.
Rosanne says Moms who commit this type of extreme crime most often suffer from mental illness.
But she points out that many other Moms face daily frustrations that if not handled carefully, could result in unintended child abuse. Here are her tips for staying cool when kids push moms too far.
1. Give yourself a time out. Be aware of your emotional state and know when it's time to take a break. Ideally, before you have lost your temper, put your child in a safe place and walk away. Go to your room, go outside, wherever you can and cool down.
2. Do not handle your child in anger. Once you have lost your temper, do not hit them, do not pick them up, do not change their diaper. Again, find yourself a place to get away very quickly and collect your thoughts.
3. Try to maintain perspective. Remember that what is going on in the moment seems really important, but in reality, it is not. It just feels that way because you are caught up in the emotion of it.
4. If you are still about to explode, get help. Call someone! Do not let the situation continue to play out. It's best if you can make arrangements for who to call before a situation like this arises. Then, post a note with that person's number on it near the phone to remind yourself to reach out when you
need help.
