Dad Ed Begley, Jr.'s new book explains how eco-friendly living works for him, wife Rachelle, and their 8-year-old daughter, Hayden.
Mom•Logic: How did you teach your daughter about green living?
Ed Begley: From her earliest days, I taught her the value of the earth, and of course, I lead by example. I love gardening and its benefits, and Hayden's been gardening with me since she was a little kid. She's learned through gardening and composting that food comes from Mother Earth and not a supermarket. She loves to recycle, ride bikes, walk, and take my electric car, and, of course, knows the benefits of all these things. Hayden is becoming quite the little expert on solar power.
ML: Explain the three levels of changes Moms and Dads can make for a more eco-friendly life.
EB: Easy Changes-- Use fluorescent light bulbs because they use two-thirds less energy than standard bulbs. Instead of driving your car, explore
alternative transportation like riding a bike or public transportation.
Start a home garden or home compost station. Growing your own
fruits and vegetables saves the energy of transporting food long
distances. Recycle, and remember to clean all the items before putting
them in the bin, because dirty papers, plastics, will be thrown away and
become garbage after all. Skip the heated dry cycle on your dish
washer. Take shorter showers.
Medium Changes-- Buy a solar oven. Get a rain barrel to collect
rainwater. Purchase a swamp cooler to cool your home instead of an air
conditioner. Install a ceiling fan. Insulate your attic.
Big Changes (but cost efficient in the long run) -- Convert your
home to be run by green power, which means your electricity comes from
renewable sources such as wind or solar power and fossil fuels. Replace
your appliances with Energy Star labeled appliances, which
means the product is part of a U.S. government-run program that helps
consumer save money and protect the environment through energy
efficient products. Buy a hybrid or electric car.
ML: Tell us about your line of cleaning supplies.
EB: It's called "Begley's Best." They're very good for the environment, but
also good for you and your family because they are made from natural
substances like pine, cane roots, and olive seeds. These products are
also naturally biodegradable.
