A video of a girl doing absolutely nothing is one of the most popular on YouTube, and kids are taking note.
In the digital age, the standard 15 minutes of fame has been
winnowed down to mere seconds. A video of Magi, a young woman who says
she's 21 but looks 14, and merely stares into her webcam for 37
seconds, has gotten literally millions of views. And for the YouTube
generation, who equate clicks with popularity, she's an inspiration -
proof that one can be famous for doing nothing. Just like
Paris Hilton.
One tween we talked to admits YouTube is a powerful way to make friends, "It makes you popular, everyone's talking about you, everybody's, like, she has that video up on YouTube. You want that."
Talk about pressure. To win a popularity contest these days, kids have to have 3 million votes. How can we unplug our kids from the idea that popularity, like fame, can be fleeting?
