It's Your Kid's Bday: Do You Call in Sick?

Mom•Logic's Jackie: The work/motherhood balance gets even harder when it comes to special occasions like a child's birthday. The Wall Street Journal's site recently debated this issue. While it seems easy to say "just go to work and leave early"... in many offices, once you're at work, anything can happen. Do you save the awkward "I can't, it's my kid's birthday" drama and just take the day off? One year, my husband and I both took the day off. The funny thing is, we
still sent our son to school. We had a nice lunch together--hey, I'm
the one who gave birth to that 11 pound kid that day! He was out at noon and we all enjoyed the day. But with three kids, this little trick might get pretty old around the office.

At our office, we don’t take all State and Federal holidays. So we get 2 “floating” holidays to use whenever we want; I usually use one for my son’s birthday. It’s a very nice benefit.
Ha! So funny you bring this up. My sons 1st birthday is tomorrow and I have been debating this for a month. As much as I would love to spend the entire day with him, I just can’t. I’m a single mom of two small boys and could really use the money. So this year, No I won’t take the day off, next year it might be different.

It’s hard to take my own b-day off, let alone one of my sons b-days. Maybe if I was throwing a party that night I would try to leave early.
