Mom•Logic Investigates Spring Break

filed under: news

What your kids aren't telling you.

Our exclusive investigation premieres Monday, April 7th, along with Mom•Logic contributor and pediatrician Dr. Cara Natterson's appearance on Good Morning America. You'll be compelled by what she has to say about why a teen's brain may actually limit their decision-making skills on spring break.

This video is disturbing. As a mom with a teen, I will be looking for this on Monday.

Is this for real? I’m not naive but this behavior is beyond extreme and scary. Drinking, sex, drugs…what’s next?

If you didn’t know what kid’s are doing on spring break, wherever it is celebrated, you are either a moron or don’t have children. I saw the cut on GMA this morning and would like to add one thing to Cara’s message. She said that discussions with children who are independent and “breaking” on their own dime are very important. To that I add this. Teaching your children needs to start about 10 years before they reach this age. If you trot out the “consequences of your actions” speech when they are 18, you are too late.

Vicky asked, “Is this for real?” I’ve lived all my life just 45 minutes from South Padre Island featured in the video. I haven’t seen the full video because it keeps freezing up on my internet connection, but I can tell you from having seen the partying first hand for many years that yes, it’s very real. When I was a young adult, I used to enjoy watching it all unfold, and even joined in on some of the drinking on occasion, but not to the extremes that these kids take it. These days, I avoid the island like the plague during Spring Break. There’s just so much chaos that it’s often virtually impossible to get around except on foot (unless you’re there in the morning when they’re all still sleeping off their hangovers).

Making matters worse is the fact that Mexico is just a 30 minute drive away, and many students who visit South Padre will also do some partying in Mexico without realizing that Mexico has a Napoleanic justice system in which you are guilty until proven innocent—just the opposite of what they know in this country. You DON’T want to get in trouble across the border, but many do.
