New Device Counts Words and Fears

Can't wait for your baby's first words? Better start talking. A lot.

A new baby gadget is getting some press again, this time showing up on Good Morning America. Lena, an electronic word counter that attaches to your baby's clothes and digitally records and tallies the words the child is exposed to throughout the day, retails for about 400 bucks.

Apparently, says the Lena Web site, a child should hear 25 million words by the time they're 4 years old (that's 17,000 words a day!) or they'll fall short in kindergarten, land a low-paying job, and wind up living in the streets.

OK, that's not exactly what it says, but you get the idea. We all know we're supposed to talk to our kids, but come on. If you yammer on nonstop like this, baby's first words might just be, "Mommy, shut the f**k up." But hey, that's a complete sentence. Not bad.

What do you think, is the Lena useful or useless?

Useless…with all of the books and learning games and sibs (*lol*) what’s the point of this machine except to scare parents into buying something their kids REALLY DON’T need?

This could also create an adult that talks waaaaay to much and is obnoxious to coworkers. yeah. i’d rather just speak when it’s necessary and when i feel like it-my son does the same. Anyone who buys this device needs to take a good hard look at their spending habits!
