Five-Second Rule Debunked

Moms who let kids eat food that dropped on the floor may just want to think twice.

We've probably all done it... kid drops food on floor, you pick it up and hand it back. Five-second rule, right? Researchers now say that even a nanosecond is long enough for food to gather and breed dangerous bacteria. Guess that means we shouldn't clean off those pacifiers and lollipops with our mouths and hand 'em back, huh?

Will this change whether you let your kids eat off the floor?

chances are, the floor’s no worse than their germy little hands…

Nope…once it’s on the floor, sorry. It’s gone.

That’s me…the 5 second rule is always in effect at my house. Look, that is the way I grew up and I turned out just fine. Everyday we turn around and it’s something else that isn’t good for us or our kids. Might as well go ahead and put everyone in plastic bubbles! Back in the day kids didn’t have ADHD, they were just kids. We lived by the 5 sec. rule and we survived. We played outside with our friends till the street lights came on and rode our bikes without helmets. Guess what we made it! It really scares me to think how things are gonna be when I have grandchildren.

I say it depends on if your floor is clean or not! I have 4 kids and something’s always getting dropped. If I’ve swept that day and mopped within the past 2 or 3, I say let them have it. Like Lisa said, we grew up doing it and we’re all fine!

I have 6 kids and we are constantly cleaning; I know what has been on my floors and my kids (behind my back) will eat or play with “cool” stuff they find outside. So while I discourage the outside behavior I also have no problem with the 5 second rule. Most of current mothers were raised using this “info” and we all turned out fine. Germs are everywhere; we do know that; even commercials assist with the awareness of that issue. Does any one know of someone who had some adverse effect specifically related to the “indoor” 5 second rule?

you have to give kids a chance to build up an immune system or their little bodies will never learn to fight off anything!!!!

My motto is: “A little dirt won’t hurt.” What will happen if our children don’t learn to ward off all the “dangerous bacteria?” I suspect this “important” scientific survey is sponsored by the fine folks at Purell. Anybody run a survey to find out what is more dangerous — germs, or hosing your tots down with bleach-like germ killers?

I didnt even know about the 5 second rule! And so far my kids appear to be ok! Often they grab it off the floor so fast and there is NO WAY I am wrestling my 4 year old for the sweet in her mouth!

My rule is once it hits the floor its gone. Originally it started with the pacifier, so it would not become a game to throw it out and have mommy continuously pick it up and give it back. Nope i was not going to play that game of fetch, but then once food started to fall i definitely did not want that in her mouth. So, the rule evolved to cover food & toys. The rule has worked well and my daughter even quotes it. LOL

Actually, I just watched a special report that showed most dropped items are safe to eat. If it’s a moist item like a tomato slice or something like that, not so much, but most items can even be left longer. They showed various items dropped on the floor, then tested them for bacteria and such, and most were safe to eat. Just a scientific report.
