Best Internet Sites for Big Kids

All Mom-tested, Mom•Logic approved.

These days, we are just as likely to let our kids play on the computer as sit in front the TV (except for those strong-willed Moms out there who ban TV altogether--how do they do it?!) That's why it's become more important than ever to make sure kids are getting the most from their time spent on the Internet--and we don't mean just loitering around Club Penguin. We've created a three-part series of best Web site bets in small, medium and large-kid versions. Here's part two for ages 5-8 with recommendations from our friends at Common Sense Media.

starfall.jpgStarfall
Starfall offers an outstanding free learn-to-read method based on numerous studies and educational research.  Don't miss the new age "ABC Song" with its associated poses and actions for each letter. One Mom•Logic Mom says her son's kindergarten teacher turned her on to the site--talk about an endorsement!
goo.jpgGame Goo
Not only are the activities on Game Goo fun AND educational, they also are ad free! The intermediate section, "Monkey Business," is a terrific way to learn sentence structure. Plus, the more your monkey winds, the more tricks he performs at the end of the game. Watch out: Parents have also been known to get hooked on Goo.
world.jpgEekoWorld
Eekoworld is comprised of so much tangible information about the planet, all presented with voice-over, so pre-readers can learn, too. Kids can create an EekoCreature and use it to explore EekoWorld. There's also an EekoHouse--an online representation of a real house that kids have to make eco-friendly for their EekoCreature, which to us look a  little like those freaky flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz, but hey, that's just us.
suess.jpg Seussville
This is a great game site for Seuss-a-holics, young and old...and VERY old. There's a "One Fish, Two Fish" matching game that shows you the exposed items first, so you can try to memorize their locations. Explore the printables section for offline coloring fun, and whatever you do, don't miss "Seussville Storymaker." Select backgrounds, characters, music, and type in dialog to make a three scene "movie." See how hilarious you can make your story!
arthur.jpg Arthur
This site is a definite "Don't Miss." Kids join Arthur and his friends in a series of entertaining and educational games, experiences, and explorations. Each teaches children to use their powers of observation and their creative problem solving skills. Definitely check out "Scoop," a wacky game where kids get to make crazy ice cream flavors like "Black Widow"? "Hair Gel Jell-o"? Or "Velvet Violin"? Cute and fun.
