Chicken Pox in Public

Would you take your baby out like this?

katie_price_chickenpox.jpg

When Brit celeb Katie Price went shopping and out to eat with her baby in tow, jaws dropped. Not because she voluntarily went shopping with a 9-month-old (which is a feat in itself), but because her kid had full-blown chicken pox, reported TMZ. Is it really OK to be out and about in that condition?

We called friend of momlogic and pediatrician Dr. Cara Natterson to find out. "Chicken pox (also called "varicella") is contagious starting 2 days BEFORE the rash appears, and continues until the last pock is crusted over--usually 5-7 days after the rash first appears," she says. So depending on how long the baby has had it, she might very well still have been contagious. Hope those waiters at The Ivy better were watching their backs!

This irks me! It’s fine if she wants stay outside in her own backyard, but what about all the people they will encounter that do not have an immunity to chicken pox while they are out in public? What if she passed on the chicken pox to a pregnant woman and thereby causing risks to the unborn baby? How selfish can she be?

This is stupid…I’m sure if the baby was contagious, Mom wouldn’t be holding her. And, so mom wants to get out, what’s the crime. It’s horrible we as a society are forced to judge celeberty Moms’. They are normal, or try to be. Leave them alone, we don’t even know the story!

Wouldn’t you hold your child, even if he or she was contagious? I don’t see why she should go out and expose others to chicken pox… it can cause birth defects including shortened limbs and blindness in unborn children. The virus that causes chicken pox shows up as shingles in elderly people. Is it worth the risk of causing them pain just to eat out and go shopping? What if the child had german measles, or tb? Would you see any difference in her taking her out then? Why expose people to disease when she can just wait a couple days? It does not make any sense to me at all.

Not only does it pose a risk to other people but the risk of a secondary infection in her daughter is not worth it. My 10 1/2 month old is getting over them right now and I read in Baby 411 that when they start to open up and ooze they can get infections including strep and alot of kids die from this. I didn’t take here anywhere for about 5 days and I have a 6 year old. I left her with grandma and daddy if I had to go somewhere. Then when I took her back in public I put long sleeves and pants to keep her pox safe and it’s hot here!!
