Warn Kids about "Ecstasy in a Can"

Mixing alcohol with caffeinated energy drinks endangers teens.

TOXIC_2.jpg
16-year-old Ashley Ramnauth died Saturday night after she mixed energy drinks with alcohol. Recently, researchers from Wake Forest University School of Medicine found that students who drank these energy cocktails (known on campuses as "Ecstasy in a can") were twice as likely to be hurt or injured, require medical attention, ride with an intoxicated driver, take advantage of someone sexually, or be sexually taken advantage of, reported Fox News.

It seems the high caffeine levels in the energy drinks mask the effects of excess alcohol--the stumbling, slurred speech or sleepiness that signal intoxication. So kids get drunk but don't feel drunk, which causes them to drink even more. If you're the mom of a teen, give them a heads up about the dangers of pouring alcohol into energy drinks. The two definitely don't mix.

Wow, I never knew this. Hiding my Red Bull right now. So scary for teens.

Only a few months ago, I got news that a friend of mine died from this. She had been drinking energy drinks all day, not sure how much, drank that night and seemed fine. She went to bed Saturday night and was found the next morning. This should not be taken lightly. It’s not just mixing, but if you drink too much energy drinks and nothing else, it can still kill you. They said she was dehydrated from only drinking energy drinks and than consuming alcohol.

1 shot of crown royal toped off with a splash of peach shnappels
dropped into a glass of red bull or Rock Star.
This drink is served everywhere in California bars??
one night I drank 7-9 (lost count)of these in 1 night and have been drinking them for years?

Shaping Youth has written multiple stories on this, and I just added a gazillion links and relevant research in this one about Ashley’s fatality called “A Monster Mix of Madness” about the dangers of these cardiac cocktails, here:

The above commenter is ‘lucky’ to say the least (7-9 sans incident? eesh!)—-

Kids’ developing bodies are particularly vulnerable to this jolt-n-crash bit; we really need to get it across to ALL ages that this is NOT ‘like a Rum & Coke,’ re: the stimulant/depressant core combo, and the quick scan of the ingredients list merits micro-focused attention.

If it has guarana (herbal stim) in addition to the caffeine and sugar, it’s even more ‘amped’ even though these ‘supplements’ aren’t tracked yet via the FDA, they sure should be. (now that the headcount’s rising the ‘powers that be’ will no doubt need to pay more attention) Sadly, that won’t help this teen…
