Momlogic's Jackie: The devastating loss of Steven Curtis Chapman's 5-year-old daughter is a tragedy for adoptive parents around the world.
When I began the process of adopting my daughter Lucy, I was surprised by the outpouring of love and support in the adoption community. And one person continually mentioned as being instrumental in the journey for many adoptive families was Steven Curtis Chapman. Chapman and his wife adopted three beautiful girls from China, to add to their three older biological kids. And his song, Cinderella, was written as a tribute to his little girls, including 5-year-old Maria.
Maria was playing in the yard the other day when she was struck by an SUV driven by her older brother. I can't imagine the pain the family is going through, especially that of her older brother. What's bittersweet is the coming together of families in the international adoption community to provide love and support to the grieving family.
Adopting a child is not just signing papers and bringing baby home. It's an excruciating process of soul searching, waiting, and adapting to a child who's suffered a great loss. It takes a lot of strength, love and faith. Adopting a child for many families is a calling--something one feels so strongly with every ounce of their being--something you're just meant to do. Chapman has been such an advocate for all who know him--now it's time to do the same for him.
Even in the wake of his family tragedy, Chapman is still hard at work helping families who ordinarily wouldn't be able to afford to adopt, with grants through through his Web site, Shaohannah's Hope. He has also established Maria's Miracle Fund in her memory.
