After teens were caught posting video of themselves doing a cruel prank, a judge makes news with his unusual punishment.
"Fire in the hole" is when pranksters cruise through a fast food drive-thru and--after receiving the drinks they ordered--they toss the drinks on the unsuspecting attendant.
Some teens in Merritt Island, FL were genius enough to tape themselves performing the prank and--after the victim found the video on YouTube--she tracked down the culprits and pressed charges. The judge got creative with their sentencing.
Momlogic called psychologist Dr. Lisa Boesky, author of When to Worry: How to Tell if Your Teen Needs Help--and What to Do About It, for her take.
• I think the judge showed good judgement with his punishment. "Fire in the hole" is a physical attack and the courts are treating it as such.
• Lately there's been way too much negative teen behavior made public on YouTube. We are overdue for the resulting negative consequences to be broadcast as well.
• "Fire in the hole" may look like a harmless prank, but the embarrassment and humiliation felt by the victim can last beyond the few moments of the event--especially if it's broadcast to potentially millions.
• One of the worst parts of the story is that fast food employees work long hours for minimal pay. They deserve respect for their hard work, not a slap in the face.
• As someone who works with juvenile delinquents, I know how important it is to nip this in the bud. This can serve as a deterrent not only for the teens involved, but for other teens who consider similar pranks.
