A 16-year-old boy from a faith-healing family dies after refusing medical treatment.

Oregon teenager Neil Beagley, 16, came from a faith-healing family. So when he got ill from a urinary tract blockage that could have been easily treated, the family chose to pray rather than seek medical treatment. On Tuesday, he died.

This comes just a few months after his 15-month-old cousin, Ava, died from bronchial pneumonia and a blood infection, also untreated. Her parents, who belong to the same Followers of Christ church as Beagley's family, now face criminal charges for manslaughter and criminal mistreatment. They plan to use a religious freedom defense.

However, officials say Beagley's death (which doctors say could have been prevented by a simple catheter) might not be a crime because he is 16. Under Oregon law, minors 14 and older can decide for themselves whether or not to accept medical treatment.

Do you think his parents are to blame?

God gave us brains, he gave us herbs to heal and people that understood their healing properties, God gave us free choice which he will not take back. Doctors were active when Jesus walk this earth, even though Jesus heald through miracles, he did not heal everybody…he had a reason for these miracles to glorify God his father, that many would see and believe…but he did not do the miracles to prevent doctors from healing. Prayer and medicine, surgery or what ever treatment is needed is the responcibility of the parents and the child was not able to seek his own medical help because his parents taught him the ways of their belief but where was the school nurse or teacher which could have told him that he could seek medical attention when he was still well enough (he had to have showen signs of illness at school at some point). If the child had the information that he was allowed to get his medical needs taken care of and did not do so it may have been he was honoring his parents, children trust their parents more than a lot of people think. That particular Faith is not on the right path and the parents chose their faith so they are to blame and so is their Pastor and also the other elders in that church. I believe in God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. I have seen healing miracles that came with or with praying and I have seen healing and have been heald by Doctors. This too is Gods plan for us.

I was raised as a “good” Christian, and was even an alter boy in my youth and though my view my not be unique, I probably have insight that most people don’t, so I can say with conviction that religious belief is ignorant. All kinds of atrocities have been enacted under the religious mantra. Wars have been fought over whose make-believe being is the right one to follow. People die needlessly. If mankind would have faith in themselves and their fellow man, this world would be a better place. How can a modern human allow their child to die, hoping some mythical being no more believable than Apollo or Zeus or any of those deities will save them? The core goal of any religion is to live in harmony with your fellow man. How can we as a society accomplish that if there are several different beliefs in how it’s done? Just look at what is happening now in the middle east, and Christians used to persecute Jews. All in the name of god or Allah or whatever. Maybe people just need a reason to fight, but to say they’re doing so because they believe, or are told BY A MAN, that’s what their god wants is ignorant. To allow your child to die because you believe a supreme being might help is ignorant. We are alone on this planet and need to rely on ourselves and each other, and to stop killing or even allowing death solely on the belief of some mythical being. The Bible, Koran, and other books of faith are just handbooks, guides on how to live in harmony and are not to be taken literally . Get over it people, THERE IS NO GOD!!!

Yes, they’re to blame. Our son was very, very ill and we couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Did we sit around and pray about it? Yes. And we took him to the ER, praying that they would figure out what was wrong. They found out—diabetic ketoacidosis. If we’d waited 2 hours, he’d have gone into a coma. 2 days, he’d been dead. God answered our prayers by telling us to go to the ER, where He had people who could help.

I PRAY FOR THESE PARENTS WHO LOST THEIR CHILD BUT FORE MOST I PRAY THAT THE LORD WILL OPEN THEIR EYES. THE LORD DIDN’T BLESS PEOPLE TO BE DOCTORS FOR NO REASON.THE LORD ALSO USES THEM TO PREFORM THE MIRACLES. GOD BLESS EVERYONE!

The law with regard to being 16 should only matter if the child (at sixteen, you are still a child in this country), was offered medical help that he thought he was able to accept. I doubt that either thing took place. Lets all pray for them, the parents, when they get sick, not that they get proper medical treatment, that they live through their own ignorance. Myself, had I done something like this to my, or any, child, I wouldn’t want to go on living…..

That is total crap. All faiths have restrictions but they are lifed for medical needs. Jewish people fast on Yom Kippur but if you feel sick, need medication, are pregnant or just can’t for some reason then you stop fasting and G-d is OK with this as you need to put your health first. No G-d wants you to refuse medical treatment at the risk of your life or he won’t have any followers to pray to him as they will all be dead.

God doesn’t want you to do nothing when a child or a person gets sick but he does want you to pray and need him. God gave us Doctors so that we can be healed that way. I do believe that there are miracles and they do happen, but God has his own reasoning and timing for that. People like this woman, make christians look crazy, if the story is 100% true. There is probably more to the story and I wouldn’t always believe what the media is telling everyone. The only thing we need to worry about is ourselvees and our relationship with Jesus. We wont be answering to him for anyone else, we don’t know what is going on in peoples lives and what makes them do the things they do. Just know for sure that you are in the right place and love everyone no matter what they do.

As a nurse I can tell you that simple infections such as the one this 16 year old boy had, can affect the thinking of an otherwise normal and healthy person. Even at sixteen, his mind may not have been in a place where he could have made that simple decision to save himself or not. Are his parents to blame? ABSOLUTELY. Their religious practices are just that….THEIRS. Grow their children and then let them decide which faith and practice they want to follow. God gave man the ability and wisdom to heal, to think that medical treatment is sinful is a sin in itself. “The Lord helps those who help themselves”. “The body is a temple”, “We are made in the image of Christ”…I could go on and on! When a family chooses their faith over the life of a child, they deserve what they get. In retrospect, would they do it again? The son didn’t deserve to die becuase of his parents beliefs and they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. So many crimes and neglect has been perpetuated in the name of religion, where do we as a community draw the line?? This is a child’s life that was lost due to the negligence of his parents. That is a crime!

I am taken back by the extreme FAITH of the parents BUT God does give our medical profession ways to cure illness. My husband is a registered nurse. Every day when he is walking from his truck to the doors of the hospital he says a prayer. His prayer is that God will give him the knowledge to help everyone of his patients. I think rather than blame the parents you should find compassion for them. They have lost their son. Imagine if you lost your child. Is this the kind of added heartache you would want to go through? In religion sometimes people are misled by their leaders. Unfortunetly, these parents learned the hard way. And, to the comment that the gates of heaven will be closed to them. You don’t know that and shouldn’t play God. It says in the Bible anyone who accepts God into their heart will see the kingdom of heaven. Who are you to say who will go to heaven? God says to love above all else. To love you must have compassion for others. By the way, I’m not religious just spiritual. I feel for people who are vulnerable and get deceived by a religious leader that doesn’t understand what God stands for. It happens alot! So, please, people when you are searching for a church, make sure they are speaking of love and compassion and not judging other people. It says in the Bible we don’t have the right to judge, lest we be judged ourselves.

Faith Healers??? their faith was obviously not strong enough. So many atrocities have been committed down the ages in the name of God, and this is just another in a long line.

The very idea. This is absolutely ridiculous. It reminds me of this story: During a terrible flood, a man is stranded on the roof of his own house. The water is rising at a steady, and alarming rate. He spots his neighbors go by in a boat, who call out to him: “Hey! What are you still doing here! Get on the boat with us!” The man replied: “Oh, no thanks! I’m sure God will save me!” And so he continued to sit on his roof. After awhile, a rescue helicopter flew over, and the crewmen aboard offered him a ladder, only to hear the man shout back: “It’s OK! I’m fine! The Lord will deliver me from the raging seas!” Eventually, the man was drowned, and when he arrived in heaven, posed the question to God: “Well, why didn’t you save me? I prayed for you to rescue me, but nothing happened!” God replied: “What are you talking about? I sent you a boat, and I sent you a helicopter!” The very idea that God not providing help and turning it down are the same thing. THE VERY IDEA. Everyone, I introduce to you: Humanity.
