Snakes and Babies Don't Mix

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

A snake found in a baby's crib kicked one mom's maternal instincts into overdrive.

This story brings a whole new meaning to crib safety. A mother in N.Y. found an unwelcome guest in her daughter's crib, a 1-foot-long California king-- no that's not a mattress size, it's a snake. The non-venomous reptile was discovered wrapped around her 7-month-old daughter's leg. Yikes. And we get worried if we leave too many stuffed animals in there!

The mom, Cari Abatemarco, managed to keep her cool and worked in tandem with a relative to lift the baby out of the crib and place the snake in a bucket. How did she manage to keep her cool to actually put that snake in a bucket?! Some of us are so afraid of snakes (and spiders, mice, rats, we could go on and on) we could barely read the story without getting the creeps. The thought of a cold-blooded reptile even NEAR our baby makes us completely lose it. How do you think you would react in the same situation?

Like you said, I hate snakes and would imagine having really hard time doing that. But then again, as mothers, we have amazing ability to protect our children. When my son was one year old, he had a seizure while he was eating and started choking. I immediately did the Heimlich and got the food out. Later on I can’t believe I was able to do that, and also call the ambulance and do mouth-to-mouth until it arrived. I was perfectly calm when I called my husband “they are taking him to the hospital now”. I freaked out later, but from somewhere inside me came the ability to stay calm and do the right things when it mattered.

I kept my cool when my daughter had appendicitis. But I totally lost it when I thought my husband accidentally ran over my son’s foot. You never know how you’ll react until you’re in the moment.
